The most misrepresented component in the spa industry is, and always will be, the pump and motor assembly. Manufacturers and sales personnel alike stand to benefit by insinuating more power than is actually being delivered. Unsuspecting customers most times will fall prey to the concept of more jets equaling more therapy. The truth is that less jets with more water flow is the combination that delivers true hydrotherapy. Having “seemingly” powerful jet pumps helps these manufacturers to sell this misrepresentation.
The industry has dealt with the deception industry wide by avoiding the issue. The consumer has very few, if any, options to have a sanctioning body to police what’s being said and to provide a list of standard comparisons to which the public could compare.
There is several ways to describe or “sell” pump horsepower. “Brake Horsepower” is very different from “Continuous Flow Horsepower”. Depending on how it is presented to you, the same pump can be sold as a 2.5 Hp or 6 Hp!
When considering spa power, you must evaluate the pumps, plumbing size, and the number and size of the jets. As an example, water flow would change dramatically if the same pump were to be utilized but the piping was to change from 1.5” to 2”to ultimately 3” in size! As the plumbing size increases, the flow enhances but the pressure decreases. It is proven that water flow is better than water pressure. 3”plumbing is better!
